Population

Estonia’s population ranks amongst the smallest in the world. According to the data taken in 2010, there are only 1 340 000 people living in Estonia. Despite its small population the country has one hundred different nationalities and ethnic groups represented. The largest of these are Estonians (68.6 per cent), Russians (25.6 per cent), Ukrainians (2.1 per cent), Byelorussians (1.2 per cent), and Finns (0.8 per cent).

Estonian people see Estonia as a multicultural and multiethnic country. According to the Ethnic Relations Survey 2000, 75 per cent of Estonians are of the opinion that different nationalities and cultures enrich Estonian society and make it more enthralling.

One positive aspect of being relatively small in numbers is that there is plenty of space, since only 32 people live per square kilometre.
